Description:
Johann Matthias Sperger was educated as a double bassist and composer in Vienna from 1767, and joined the Society of Viennese Musicians in 1778. He appeared as a virtuoso soloist at each of its concerts with works of his own compositions, and from 1783 to 1786 he was a member of Count Ludwig von Erdey's court chapel orchestra, and in 1789 he was appointed principal double bass in the Mecklenburg court orchestra. Spörger was also a prolific composer, composing more than 44 symphonies, 18 double bass concertos, and numerous other works. His symphonies have been described as simple, elegant music in typical early classical symphonic form, but Werner Ehrhardt & Larte del Mondo express the composer's finest qualities by infusing them with a wealth of dynamic emotion.
