The eighth album from Lake Street Dive, a live band known not only for its eclectic sound that boldly crosses soul, folk, jazz, and classic pop with originality, but also for its inclusive five-piece ethos that forges powerful connections between all audiences! For this album, their first in three years following their first album, "Obviously" (2021), the band worked again with Grammy Award-winning producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Gary Clark Jr.) and recorded the album at his Phantom Studios in Tennessee. The album, which encompasses all sounds from R&B to funk to Brazilian pop, opens with the glorious synths of the title track. The title track, Bermis recalls, "came from a roll of the dice where I was the captain, but when we tried to get to production, we cut it wrong and it ended up in a weird beat. Bridget came up with the story of two people with dubious backgrounds trying to start over together."One of several tracks featuring the horn section of the Brooklyn-based jazz band The Hunters, it is an off-the-middle love song that celebrates the thrill of defying expectations and following one's heart's desire. Throughout the album, the band reveals the vastness of its musical and expressive imagination. For example, on "Better Not Tell You," the band delivers a '70s funk-inspired dance track that Bermis originally composed from the perspective of the three witches in "Macbeth." On "Far Gone," we hear bouncy psychedelic rock that explores what Price summarizes as "this existential crisis of realizing we're addicted to technology before we even take a step back from it. The album closes with "Set Sail (Prometheus & Eros)," a duet between Bermis and Price featuring a mesmerizing string arrangement by Rob Moose (The National, St. Vincent, Bon Iver).
