Description:
Beautiful songs by leading Croatian composers Blagoe Belsa (1873-1934) was a leading Croatian composer. He studied in Zagreb and Vienna and composed mainly in Vienna. Influenced by Wagner and R. Strauss, and later by Mahler, he brought modern orchestration to Croatian music. Although he was a successful opera composer, he also wrote many lyrical songs. This is the world premiere recording of 23 of his songs. The solo voice is sung by his fellow countryman, bass-baritone Kresimir Strajanac. Of the two discs, one is sung on German poems by Heine and others, and one is sung on Croatian poems by Josip, the composer's brother, and others. Only the last song is in Italian. His songs are essentially Romantic in nature, with a soft sound and dramatic expression reminiscent of Schubert. Sometimes Croatian folk-like verses also appear, which is very interesting.
