The World of 16th-Century Europe, as Tasto Solo, an Ensemble Recognized by Savall ALIA VOX is pleased to announce the release of a new title by Savall's highly recommended ensemble, Tasto Solo. The program features works by Vincenzo Ruffo (c. 1508-1587) and his contemporaries. Ruffo was a composer active in the cathedrals (churches) of various Italian lands in the 16th century, and it is said that while in Verona he taught Marcantonio Ingenieri, who was Monteverdi's teacher. In Italy at that time, musical styles (dances) derived from dances were very popular, and various styles of works, such as the technique of composing fantasias titled ricercar (ricercare), were greatly developed. As in the case of instrumental music, there was also a great deal of research on instrumental and vocal performance, and many articles were written on the various kinds of superb techniques required for vocal music as well as instrumental music. The performers have consulted these treatises, but here they use the standard Italian chamber music of the early Renaissance (small harpsichord without damper in the upper register, very simple harp, viola da gamba, and lute).
