＜Dexter, 1973 Cologne "The Subway Club" Dexter's version of "Round Midnight" was recorded for the first time! Recently, it has been a pleasure to see a series of previously unreleased live performances by Dexter Gordon and Woody Shaw being released one after another. Here we have another great performance by these two musicians. The main five tracks were recorded live at "The Subway Club" in Cologne in September 1973, with a trio consisting of Dutch pianist Jeev Loflin, Dutch bassist Henk Havelhoek, and American drummer Tony Inzalaco, who was living in Germany at the time. The quartet was accompanied by a trio consisting of the American drummer Tony Inzalaco, who was living in Germany at the time. The performance offers plenty of long, full solos by Dex, who was completely unaware that he was being recorded. His dynamic and delicate tenor on "Secret Love," which uses part of the lyrics as the introduction to the song, is a joy to listen to. The live recordings made in Montreux during the same period are also very good. Two of the remaining four songs were performed in Den Haag, Holland, in March 1971. The trio is led by the famous German pianist Sies Slinger, and the participation of Maarten Altena, a Dutch bass player who has a strong impression as a free jazz bassist, is also remarkable.The last two pieces were performed in Stuttgart in 1965, backed by the trio of Swiss Georges Grunz and Americans Jimmy Woody and Stu Martin, but it is interesting to note that "Round Midnight" is the earliest performance of this piece by Dex. The versions on Steeplechase and Columbia's "Homecoming" are well known, but the first recorded performance of the song is very fresh, and the playing is so seamless that it may come to be considered the signature version of the song. The first performance is so fresh as far as it is recorded.
