The Sixteen! The Sixteen, founded by Harry Christophers in 1979, has been one of the world's finest choral ensembles ever since. This album focuses on the theme of "imitation" and includes works by Orlando di Lasso (Lassus), who was active in the late 16th century. The technique known as "parody," in which a piece is inspired by another person's motet, chanson, or monophonic chant (Gregorian chant) and then reworked to form another work, was very popular in Europe in the late 16th century, and Lassus was one of its most famous proponents. This program, entitled "Masters of Imitation," will showcase some of the finest examples of "parody" of the period, including Lasso's finest secular madrigals, commissioned by The Sixteen and "imitated" by Bob Chilcott, The program also included a rare work by Maddalena Caslana. Caslana was the first female composer in the history of Western music to have her music printed and published in its entirety, and she was the first person to receive accolades from Lasso.These works are on the program of the Choral Pilgrimage 2024.
