Thais" was newly staged by Peter Konwitschny at the Theater an der Wien in January 2021. Known as "The Meditation of Thais," the opera is set in ancient Egypt. The opera is set in ancient Egypt, where the monk Athanael attempts to convert the prostitute Thais and lead her to faith, only to find himself captivated by her. Although it was not easy to get his works performed at the Paris Opera at the time, Massenet had "The King of Lahore," "Le Cid," "Werther," and "Manon" staged one after another. This "Thais" is a work that marks the peak of Massenet's career. Although "Meditation de Thais" is well-known today, it is an ambitious work that expresses the characteristics of Massenet. Another reason why it is rarely performed in modern times is that the two main characters, Thais and Athanaël, require a high level of technique. For Taïs, Nicole Chevalier was selected as the Opelungwelt Young Artist of the Year 2020.Athanael is played by Josef Wagner, a young bass-baritone from Vienna. He sings beautifully the conflicting emotions of Thais and Athanael.
