The Zurich Opera House is now highly popular for offering productions of even higher quality than those at renowned major opera houses. A DVD has been released featuring the March 2011 performance of Verdi’s *Falstaff*. Principal Conductor Daniele Gatti achieves an exquisite balance—a performance that is crisp and taut yet retains an Italian sensibility, ensuring the orchestration never feels overly heavy. Ambrogio Maestri, in the title role, is a powerful baritone known for his large stature and expertise in villainous roles, but here he brilliantly sings and portrays a Falstaff who is brazen yet surprisingly stylish and endearing. Alice is one of Barbara Frittoli’s signature roles, and her performance is simply outstanding. The casting is spot-on, with Switzerland’s veteran mezzo-soprano, Yvonne Naef, as Mrs. Quickly, and the young Austrian soprano Efa Liebau—who made her breakthrough at the Zurich Opera House—as Nannetta. Although Sven-Eirik Bechtolf’s production shifts the time period to around the post-World War II era, it is fundamentally a very straightforward staging. Thanks in part to the clean and beautiful set design, this is a thoroughly enjoyable production of *Falstaff*. King International
