The late maestro Claudio Abbado, who passed away on January 20, 2014, performed Mozart’s Oboe Concerto in C Major, K. 314, and Haydn’s Concerto Symphony in B-flat Major, H. 44, at a concert held in March 2013 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid’s Auditorio de Zaragoza, the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid in March 2013 have been released on CD. Abado’s conducting—always approached with sincere dedication to the music and striving for clarity and balance—was consistently superb. In concertos, he not only controlled the performances of the soloist and the orchestra but also took great care to ensure the music was expressed in the best possible way; it can be said that this approach never wavered, even in his later years. The Mozart Orchestra is an ensemble founded by Abbado in 2004, bringing together young musicians, and it has since discovered many talented artists. Abado and the orchestra have been presenting concerts and making live recordings of Mozart’s wind concertos since August 2011; for this concert as well, Abado featured young, talented soloists in whom he placed immense trust, resulting in a performance full of freshness and vitality. Oboist Lucas Matías Navarro was born in 1978 in Valverde del Camino, Spain. In 2006, he won first prize at the 8th Karuizawa International Oboe Competition and was also awarded the Mozart Prize. Invited by Abbado to serve as principal oboist of the Mozart Orchestra, he has since served as principal oboist with the European Chamber Orchestra, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others. Navarro, who enjoys Abado’s unwavering trust, delivers a superb performance of Mozart’s Oboe Concerto. In addition, violinist Grigory Ars, concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, cellist Konstantin Pfitz, and bassoonist Guillaume Santana—all principal players with the same orchestra—making this a monumental live recording in which these young musicians, discovered by Abbado, poured their hearts and souls into their performance.
