Description:

Odd Snieggen (1952-) was born in Stockholm. After acquiring basic composition skills, he studied musicology and composition at Stockholm University, worked as a musicologist and music teacher, and since 1987 has been involved in the promotion of classical, jazz, and trad music at the Swedish Music Information Center, and in 2006, music for a series of radio programs for Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, among others, He has resumed composing music. Snyegen's compositions focus on form, such as construction and stateliness, and on works for traditional ensembles. This is Snehagen's first "Composer Portrait. To the Stars on Pig's Wings" for the Italian contemporary music ensemble Alter Ego. Adagio Assai, a "dirge" premiered by Italy's Davide Brutti at Festival SituAzioni 2012 in Umbria. Brutti's "First Piece for Alto Saxophone," premiered at the same festival, was dedicated to Swedish free jazz player Lars-Göran Urandell. Figures and Signals" for the contemporary music "Duo Dillon-Torquati".The title of the piece is an allusion to the words of Axel Oxenzhelna, the vizier to King Gustav II Adolf: "Do you know, my son, how little wisdom rules the world?" The String Quartet No. 1, a tragic music in which the three movements are likened to the three acts of an opera and the four players to four characters, was premiered by the Steenhammar Quartet.
