While live albums and compilations of previously unreleased tracks have kept fans satisfied over the five years since their last studio album, *Sweep It Into Space*, nothing beats an album packed with new, ear-tingling tracks. *ThereNear* is truly a masterpiece with a sound at the very pinnacle of their craft. Recorded intensively over a short period of one year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, *ThereNear* was recorded almost entirely by the core trio—Murph, the king of thunder tubes; Lou Barlow, the human tornado (bass/vocals); and the incomparable J. Mascis (guitar/vocals)— —and features a few contributions on piano and organ by renowned local musician Ken Mauri. And the album roars from start to finish. J’s guitar tone on *ThereNear* is wilder than ever, which may be partly due to the fact that he’s playing through a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK1 amp he recently acquired. “I bought the same amp that Chris Dixon had when we made our first album. Chris used his amp at home to record us playing. It’s a really interesting sound—one I hadn’t heard in a while. With this album, I was trying to recapture exactly that sound. The Rolling Stones started using Mesa Boogie in the ’70s after hearing Santana play. Then The Clash imitated The Rolling Stones, and so on. As time went on—with models like the MK2—Mesa Boogie’s sound shifted more toward metal. “But the MK1 sounds like a more powerful version of the Fender sound. You’ve probably heard that Rick Rubin always plays the debut album to the bands he produces and says, ‘Let’s get back to that sound,’ right? So I applied his advice to myself,” J says. When asked about the philosophical complexity of his lyrics, J replied, “When I’m writing a song, I’m not always sure exactly ‘what’ it’s about. I think the meaning will naturally emerge eventually. Anyway, I use whatever words I can. Also, the difficult books I’m reading at the time have a big influence. I try not to overthink it too much. “I think it’s a bit boring that Spotify displays all the lyrics to a song. That’s no fun, is it?” he replied. *ThereNear* is an album that carries on the legacy of Dinosaur Jr.’s masterpieces. The new songs will surely sound amazing live, alongside their legendary hits and those overwhelming riffs that reverberate through the venue.
