This collection features works performed on a Stein-style fortepiano. Johann Andreas Stein developed the Viennese fortepiano action that inspired composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and the German Romantics. This album features works closely associated with Stein, performed on a fortepiano built in southern Germany in 1799 by the Stein school. The program vividly unravels the historical context, combining works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn—who highly valued Stein's fortepianos—alongside pieces by Gottfried Eckardt, a close friend of Stein's, and Ignaz von Beck, who reportedly won a musical duel with Mozart on a Stein instrument, captivating Stein himself.The delicate tones of precious antique instruments and the expressive performance of Takahisa Ogura convey the sensibilities of composers of that era to the present day. Following the previous work (ITE002), which was recorded on a replica of the earliest Steinway, this album was also recorded at the workshop of renowned Belgian craftsman Chris Marne. Restored and revived by Chris Marne, this fortepiano has the same case structure and action type as the earliest Stein instruments, giving it a sound even older than 1799 and the most advanced playing characteristics of its time.
