Jeremy Pelto, one of the leading jazz trumpeters/composers/writers of our time, has woven a huge picture scroll of sound by incorporating flute, vibraphone, synths, mellotron (!), and other instruments into his third album as a quintet on High Note Records. After emerging in the early 00's, Pelto made a major shift from acoustic to electric playing in the early 10's. In recent years, he has returned to the acoustic route. This album is characterized by the use of electronic instruments such as Moog synthesizers and Mellotrons (rare!). ) and other electronic instruments. This may sound like a return to the electronica route, but in fact it is the opposite. Pelto uses them sparingly and incorporates them beautifully into the group's sonic palette. Occasionally, a touch of 70's independent jazz is added, which is a nice touch.Flute is also used on two tracks, adding another dimension to the spectrum of colors. M-2, the title track and composed for Pelto's early, unrecorded band Creation, is a typical Pelto song with a soft groove, rich melodies, and a perfect interplay of improvisation. Other tracks include M-3, inspired by Mulgrew Miller's "Second Thougts," and M-4 and M-5, a pair of songs that weave a kaleidoscopic tapestry of colors, and one can't help but tip one's hat to Pelto's magic.
