The 100th Anniversary of Art Blakey’s Birth. A miraculous discovery: official Blue Note studio recordings made immediately after the classic album *Morning*! Art Blakey celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth in October 2019. A previously unreleased studio recording from the golden age of the Jazz Messengers, the legendary band he led, has been miraculously unearthed. Recorded on March 8, 1959, at Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey under the production of Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion, this phantom recording had been listed in the discography but had never been released for over half a century. Recorded just four months after *Morning* (October 30, 1958)—a masterpiece of Blakely’s career and one of the greatest hard bop albums of all time—this session features the temporary return of Hank Mobley, a founding member of the band, on tenor saxophone. This lineup appears on no other official studio recording. The tracklist includes the four songs featured on the live album *At the Jazz Corner of the World Vol. 1 & 2* (April 15, 1959), recorded at Birdland five weeks after this session, plus two completely unreleased tracks. With the perfectly matched duo of Morgan and Mobley leading the front line and the band coming together in unison, this is a must-have for all jazz fans, directly conveying the excitement of the golden age of modern jazz. 180g heavyweight LP.
