Description:

The first new album in three years from the remarkable trio of pianists leading ECM, which will celebrate its 55th anniversary in 2024! ECM's eighth album is the first in three years by the pianist who represents "ECM in the 21st century," Linda May Han Oh (double-b), following her previous album "Uneasy" (2021), which was named one of Pitchfork's 50 best albums of 2021 and received rave reviews from various media outlets, This is the second album by the talented trio featuring Linda May Han Oh (double-b) and Tyshawn Thorley (ds). The trio's performance, even more powerful than on the previous album, is full of creativity, free and lively interplay, and a sound that combines warmth and impact, atmosphere and transparency, all born of their trusting relationship. While focusing on Ayer's own compositions, with their appealing melodies and exhilarating rhythms that continue his drive to explore new territory, the album also includes songs by his respected predecessors.Throughout the entire album, including Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed," which Iyer chose as an indirect homage to the late Chick Corea, and "Noner," a whirlwind performance of the avant-garde sage Roscoe Mitchell, who was a cherished mentor, you can hear a witty performance that resonates with an intuitive intensity of purpose. This is one of Iyer's finest works. Commenting on the title of the album, "Compassion" = "Compassion," Iyer said: "The anxiety experienced when creating art in the midst of suffering never disappears, nor should it. That tension shapes the creative process at every stage. The counterpart to that tension, the response to that call, is a rejuvenating sense of making music with, for, and among the people. I draw endless inspiration from Tyshawn and Linda ...... We developed this music on stage, in the world, in spaces of community and encounter."Love In Exile," an album with Al Jihad Aftab and Shahzad Ismaili, was nominated for two Grammy Awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Global Music Performance. The album has received increasing attention. Vijay Iyer (p), Linda May Han Oh (double-b), Tyshawn Thorley (ds) ★Recorded at Octaven Audio, New York, May 2022
