"One Touch, One Explosion" is a classic album born during the dawn of Japanese rock. Released in 1974, other notable releases from that same year in Japan include Sadistic Mika Band’s "Black Ship" and Gedo’s "Gedo." Looking overseas, notable releases include King Crimson’s "Red," Deep Purple’s "Burn," Genesis’ “Broadway’s End,” Joni Mitchell’s “Court and Spark,” Queen’s “Sheer Heart Attack,” and David Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs.” It is truly remarkable that this album was created with virtually no time lag from the progressive rock scene in the UK, which was at its peak at the time. It is a miraculous album that leaves one in awe of the overwhelming technical skill required to create such an innovative work in an era when information was scarce. That is precisely why it remains completely timeless today and continues to receive high praise overseas as it is rediscovered. Inspired by the surge of overseas artists performing in Japan in the early 1970s, the band shifted from their previous blues-rock and hard-rock-based style and performance format toward a progressive, epic-scale approach that incorporated lyricism and humor. Combined with their unique psychedelic poetic world, this album saw the band’s originality blossom all at once. Four young men in their twenties independently crafted a sound that reinterpreted the hard rock and progressive rock that were mainstream in the U.S. and the U.K. at the time. It is also known as Japan’s first self-produced album. As a masterpiece that is both rock and progressive, and as the origin of the J-FUSION genre that became hugely popular overseas, this is a must-listen for not only hardcore music fans but also younger generations.
