Baroque Solistene, a period ensemble formed in Norway in 2005, and its artistic director, Bjatte Icke, have created a program of music from a 17th century London tavern called "The Alehouse Sessions" (PRCD1017/RCD1017). The Playhouse Sessions" (PRCD1096/RCD1096) was also a great success. Another special proclamation they have performed in various places together with "The Alehouse Sessions," "The Beautiful Watermill Girl," has finally been released on CD! Schubert's "Die schöne schöne schönen" (The Watermill Girl) is a series of songs with music on poems by Müller, and together with "Winterreise" and "The Swan Song," is considered one of Schubert's three great song cycles. Director, arranger, and singer Thomas Guthrie has arranged and performed this popular work in a version that has never been heard before.Guthrie's doctoral research at York University on the ornamentation of Schubert's Lieder, including the idea that Schubert expected his singers to ornament and arrange the music themselves, led to this particular "Daughter of the Beautiful Watermill House" project. Instead of singing in front of a large grand piano in white tie and tails in a sophisticated cultural venue with a large audience, the Schubert songs are performed in an intimate social setting, where each participant brings an instrument, and in a relaxed and (often) alcoholic state, sings unpretentiously about friendship and stories. and is realized with a string quintet with double bass and two guitars.
