The eighth collection of the Brahms Trio's "History of Russian Piano Trios" presents works by two Berlin-based Russian composers, Lopatnikov and Yuon. Nikolai Lopatnikov is one of the leading composers of 20th century Russian modernism. Born in Reval (now Tallinn, Estonia), he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In November 1917, after the revolution, he and his family fled to Finland and then to Germany, where he was highly acclaimed and gained fame throughout Europe. The "Piano Trio in A minor" is an ambitious work that combines a polyphonic structure with Russian melodies and elements of jazz and kitsch. Paul Yuon was born in Moscow. After studying at the Higher School of Music in Berlin, he returned to Russia, but returned to Berlin again in 1898, and in 1934 moved to Switzerland, where he lived the rest of his life. His "Suite in C major" consists of five movements with light musical ideas and dramatic developments, skillfully incorporating the diverse musical styles prevalent at the time.The "Piano Trio in A minor" is a masterpiece that combines elements of Russian folk music with a precise Brahmsian composition, demonstrating Yuon's sense of style and a brilliant synthesis of Russian sentiment and Western techniques.
