The three cello concertos on this album, entitled "Times of Transition," show how, in the late 18th century, the music of the Baroque period, which until then had been dominated by counterpoint, gradually shifted to the "Gallant style," characterized by its simple and clear style of writing. The C.C.E., C.M. and C.M. are placed at the beginning of the piece. The cello concerto by C.P.E. Bach, composed in 1753, is a representative work of the Gallant style, and is a beautiful piece in which the cello sings an endless stream of melodies rich in emotion that is also reminiscent of French rococo taste. Although written before the works of Boccherini and Haydn, it has a novelty that is ahead of its time. Haydn's concerto No. 1 has both baroque and classical styles, while No. 2 is a fuller style of music comparable to his later symphonies. Andreas Brandelid, cello, was born in Copenhagen in 1987 and made his debut at the age of 14 performing Elgar's cello concerto with the Royal Danish Symphony Orchestra. This time, backed by the Concerto Copenhagen, conducted by the heavyweight Lars Ulrik Mortensen, he plays a neat and songful melody on a 1707 "Boni-Hegar" Stradivarius. Naxos Japan
