Description:
This is the first farsa (a one-act comedy) composed by Rossini (1792–1868) when he was 18 years old. The story goes that while preparations were underway to stage a new farsa at the Teatro San Moise in Venice, the originally scheduled composer withdrew from the project, so the commission was passed on to Rossini, who had just graduated from music school. The plot revolves around the British merchant Tobias Mill, his daughter Fanny, her lover Milford, and a Canadian merchant named Slook, who is to take Fanny in exchange for settling a debt. The story revolves around these characters. Will the absurd scheme of Tobias, the father who issues a promissory note treating his beloved daughter as “merchandise,” succeed? Naxos Japan
