Florence Price is a composer who is rapidly gaining international attention. Price, who has been called "the first black woman to compose a symphony," boldly incorporates African rhythms and black spirituals to create music that is both accessible and emotionally appealing. This is typical of the music on this album. The music on this album is no exception. The symphonic poems also feature gorgeous and colorful orchestrations influenced by Hollywood film music. Price won the American Composition Award for his Symphony No. 1, and his premiere of the work was highly acclaimed. His Concert Overture No. 1, which features a Negro spiritual, was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and broadcast on television to great acclaim. The Dance Suite is Price's own orchestration of "Three Little Negro Dances" for piano. The melody is full of song and cheerful rhythms can be heard throughout. The NAXOS label has recorded Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 (8.559827) and Symphony No. 3 (8. 559897), and the NAXOS label has recorded Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 (8.559827) and Symphony No. 3 (8. 559897), both of which are also based on Negro spirituals. This is a performance by conductor John Jeter, who has been active in performing Price's works, recording Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 (8.559827) and Symphony No. 3 (8. 559897) for the NAXOS label.
