[Master Conductor Blomstedt Presents a First-Time Recording of Brahms’s “Variations on a Theme by Haydn,” Featuring a Rare Rehearsal Recording.] Brahms composed masterful variations in the fields of piano, chamber music, and orchestral music. His “Variations on a Theme by Haydn” was written when he was 40 years old; the version for two pianos was composed first, followed by the orchestral version. Considered one of the masterpieces showcasing Brahms’s mature orchestration, it is still performed regularly today. This recording features Bromsett’s performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in February 2014, along with the rehearsal that preceded it. Although he was 86 years old at the time, he delivered a classical and dignified performance with not a hint of slackness. Beyond the orchestra’s technical skill, its warm tone enhances the work. The rehearsal segment is an excerpt edited for broadcast, featuring narration by the program host at the beginning and end (all in German). The rehearsal footage was edited to focus on sections where Blomstedt gave the orchestra the most instructions. Even here, his energetic delivery—which belies his age—is evident as he issues detailed instructions one after another, sometimes singing out the melody in a powerful voice to demonstrate subtle changes in dynamics. While Blomstedt is known for his refined performances, this footage conveys the immense passion he pours into the rehearsals that shape them. *The import edition booklet contains only English and German liner notes; there is no transcript (of Blomstedt’s remarks).
