Description:
This album compiles music played on an accordion known as the "hararabo," a tradition passed down among the Masikoro, a farming and herding community in southwestern Madagascar. It is said that the diatonic accordion, originally brought from Europe, was adapted to their musical system through a modification technique called "famoshira" (meaning "castration"), in which the metal reeds are filed down, and that it became established in Madagascar around the late 19th century. Since new instruments are difficult to obtain, the same instruments are passed down from generation to generation; however, the creaking of the bellows and the clicking of the buttons caused by wear and tear over time have, in fact, become important elements that define this music. Along with the "kantsa" (a type of rattle), the "langoro" (a drum), singing, and handclapping, the hararabo appears not only in everyday entertainment such as drinking gatherings but also in various rituals. This album features the virtuoso playing of Michel Gaston—a master musician who honors tradition while possessing an extremely original style—as well as performances by various musicians recorded on-site.
