Amanda Forsythe
Description:
This album features two of Handel's young Italian cantatas by Amanda Forsythe, a talented soprano from New York, USA, and Opera Prima, led by Cristiano Contadin, a spirited Italian viola da gamba player. The Abandoned Armida, composed in 1707, is a soprano cantata for solo voice, named after Torquato Tasso's "Liberated Jerusalem," and the Dying Agrippina, composed in 1708, is a soprano cantata for solo voice about Agrippina, the mother of the tyrant Nero. Both works are masterpieces by the young Handel, which caustically depict a woman's intense emotions in the face of tragedy. In both works, we can hear Handel's overwhelming talent in the use of a variety of techniques to express the shaken emotions of the characters, Armida, who has been left by her lover, and Agrippina, whose life is threatened by her son. In between these two pieces, a major symphonia and a trio sonata are interspersed to balance the album. The album ends with a recitative and aria taken from Handel's first oratorio, "The Triumph of Time and Enlightenment" (1707), which was composed at the same time as the cantatas. Forsythe's beautiful voice and expressive power, which have kept her active in baroque opera for many years, are perfect for these works. Her beautiful voice and expressiveness are perfectly suited for these works. She sings beautifully in the ambitious music of the brilliant young Handel. The virtuoso Italian opera prima ballerinas, including Federico Guglielmo, one of the best baroque violin virtuosos, and Roberto Loreggian, a renowned bass player, also support Forsythe's singing, further enhancing the dramatic music.
