The forefront of medieval music research, with a close look at one of the greatest 15th-century Netherlandish composers. Le Miroir de Musique is a group of medieval music performance specialists led by Baptiste Romain, who studied in Paris, Basel, and Lyon and has been active at the forefront of both medieval music research and performance practice. The latest release is a collection of works by the 15th-century master Banchois, who served at the court of the Duke of Burgundy, a stronghold of the arts. Although Binchois was as influential as Dufay, who contributed to the court, his career is still a mystery, and it is difficult to get a complete picture of the composer. This disc presents a well-balanced selection of church music and secular works for the court, including works that have survived as instrumental pieces and instrumental arrangements of vocal pieces, in an attempt to decipher the fascination of Banschois' works from various perspectives, in which the archaic content of medieval courtly love songs is juxtaposed with exquisite polyphony. The program is well balanced with multiple examples of the same musical theme, and the program progression is consistent, which is a welcome feature.In addition to the a capella singing by six singers, you can enjoy the elegant sounds of various medieval instruments such as multiple wiels (medieval fiddles), bagpipes, and the Gothic harp with its characteristic roaring sound, as well as the music of the unstable period from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance, which is full of interesting aspects. The liner notes (in English, French, and German) based on the latest research are also well worth reading. The English translation is by Elizabeth Ramsay, a medieval bowed instrument virtuoso who also participates in this recording, and the German translation is by Marc Levon, a string repellant player who also participates in this recording.
