Description:

From the ARIADNE series of the SOMM label, which has been making rare reissues of broadcast and private recordings as sound sources, comes Elgar's Symphony No. 2 by Boult and the Scottish National Orchestra, which has been out of print for a long time. Other valuable recordings and interviews are also included, as well as a brief dialogue with Elgar's beloved daughter, Carys. Elgar's Second Symphony was premiered in 1911 under the composer's direction as a follow-up to the highly successful First Symphony, but it was not as well received as the First. The turning point in the recognition of this piece as a masterpiece came at a concert in 1920, which was conducted by Adrian Boult. More than half a century later, in 1975, he conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an EMI recording (now Warner) that is considered a definitive masterpiece. The recording of No. 2 here was made in 1963, released on the Waverly label in England, and re-released on Classic for Pleasure in 1971, but disappeared from the catalog after this. It is a "forgotten recording," as the album's subtitle states. The performance time is about two minutes shorter than the London Philharmonic recording, but the interpretation itself is already well-developed, and the catharsis that results from the music's leisurely pace and long-lasting exultation is a real immersion into the work. The choral pieces on CD 2 are a good introduction to the work of this master of this field as well. The final CD is a fascinating conversation with Bernard Keefe that lasts nearly 30 minutes, in which Keefe recalls the conducting methods of Nikisch, his former teacher, and talks about the British orchestras he has conducted. The booklet includes a 9-page commentary by Nigel Simeone, a scholar of 20th century music whose book "Edward Elgar and Adrian Boult" will be published in 2025 (English only). Naxos Japan
