The operetta genius created a unique masterpiece in a complete version that includes all of the numbers that have never been heard before! Offenbach's operetta genius achieved decisive success with his "Orphee in Hell (Heaven and Hell)" in 1858. The music for "Life in Paris" is a unique masterpiece that marks a turning point for Offenbach, whose forte was in works set in imaginary worlds, but the music for the five acts was too much for the performers of the time, and at the premiere in the fall of 1866, after weeks of rehearsals, many numbers were deemed unplayable and had to be cut. The premiere of the abridged version, however, was a great success, and when the opera was performed again in 1873, it was revised into a four-act version that has been preserved for posterity, so that many of the important highlights that were originally intended to be heard in the opera have been relegated to oblivion. This recording, made possible under the supervision of the Palazetto Bru Zane (Center for Romantic French Music), is the world's first recording of a project that recovers all such omissions, includes the dialogue, and restores "Life in Paris" to its original form as Offenbach had originally envisioned it.The entire work, including the difference in scale, has been interpreted in a surprisingly fresh manner.
