Description:
This is the second volume of the Bruckner From Archives series of CD recordings of the complete symphonies, selected from the 11,000 aircheck tapes of John F. Berkey, the executive director of the Bruckner Society of America and an active broadcaster. This volume includes two symphonies written between 1868 and 1973, as well as the Mass No. 2. The D minor symphony is performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Eduard van Beinum. The performance of the D minor symphony is conducted by Eduard van Beinum and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and is expected to be very good since the duo concentrated on Bruckner in the 7th (1953), 8th (1955), and 9th (1956) symphonies. The score is based on the edition by Joseph Venantius Wess (1863-1943) from the complete Bruckner symphonies published by Universoal in 1927. According to Korstvedt, the performance was "crisp and racy, as is typical of Baynum. The second piece was performed by Georg Ludwig Jochum, Eugen Jochum's younger brother, with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne. Korstvedt said of this performance, "It is an excellent performance. He describes the work as "a deeply emotional, brilliantly imaginative, and full-sounding work that lets us hear No. 2. Karl Forster, the conductor of the Mass No. 2 included at the beginning of the concert, was a student of philosophy and theology, and from 1934 to 1963 he served as music director of St. Hetwig's Cathedral in Berlin. During the war he was forbidden to perform, but after the war he was quick to revive the choir, and in 1961 he was invited to perform for the Pope; the CD does not name the soloists, but according to the first LP, Agnes Giebel, Marga Hefgen, and Josef Traxel, Gotthrope Flick sang.
