The art of the flute, which prepared the way for the advent of classical music, is presented on original instruments from that period! This is the third volume in a series that introduces rare original 18th century instruments carefully selected from the collection of Peter Spohr, a world-renowned collector of historical flutes, through masterpieces that match the region and period in which each instrument was created. The first sonata collection (CCS43020) and the second concerto collection (CCS45323) were both Baroque-oriented, but this time the program features works from the Rococo to Classical periods up to Mozart's time, and the selection of instruments made in the latter half of the 18th century is remarkable. Some of the instruments were made of ivory, which is unthinkable in the 21st century. Ashley Solomon's skill in bringing out the best of each instrument's characteristics and the charm of each register, from the warmth of its tone to the core and dependability of its sound, was once again a delight to behold. The well-trained musicians of the Floregium, one of the best old music instrumental groups in the U.K., also provide a tasteful ensemble performance in various places. The order of the pieces is also exquisite, with the graceful simplicity of Scottish folk songs, which were widely loved even in the 18th century, adding to the enjoyment between the sonata form recordings.The liner notes (in English, French, and German) include detailed descriptions of each instrument.
