Beethoven's "Missa solemnissima" (Solemn Mass), completed in 1823, was composed for Archduke Rudolf, who was a close friend of Beethoven. The work was originally intended for the celebration of the Archduke's inauguration as archbishop in 1820, but he was unable to make it in time for that date, and it was eventually premiered in St. Petersburg in 1824. Although a major work reflecting Beethoven's noble intentions, this religious work is not often performed in churches.Michael Gielen, a great conductor, passed away in March 2019. He described the work as "un-Christian," but he deeply loved the spirituality of the work and performed it many times. There have been several recordings of the work, including a 2005 performance with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and a 1987 performance with the Deutsches Rundfunk Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks Baden-Baden. This is a "historic recording" of a performance with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1985.
