Uwanosora’s fourth album, *Ema*, has a slightly different feel from their previous works. This album features arrangements that leave ample space between the notes, creating a gentle, relaxed atmosphere that naturally envelops the entire record. The sound, which makes greater use of vintage synthesizers than ever before, naturally blends the aesthetic sensibility inherited from vintage pop with a sense of freedom reminiscent of contemporary international indie music, painting a new landscape that goes beyond mere nostalgia. The vocals of Megumi Iemoto and Hiroe Kakutani, recorded with ribbon microphones, are imbued with an intimacy and warmth as if they were speaking right into your ear, further enriching the album’s atmosphere. While the lyrics are imbued with the fresh lyricism and seasonal scenes characteristic of Uwanosora, the album also features works that look toward the present more than ever before. “Kuma ga Deru Kara” (Because There Are Bears) depicts the issue of bear sightings in an allegorical manner; “Bertracchi no Gansaku” (Bertracchi’s Forgery) uses a forgery scandal as a theme to reflect on the ambiguity of art and value; and “Shinseiki no Hito” (People of the New Century) portrays the daily lives of those living in a digital society. Although these songs draw on news and contemporary society as motifs, they avoid sharp criticism, instead portraying the humor and endearing qualities of people from Uwanosora’s unique perspective. On the other hand, in “Dancing with Blue,” “Autumn Ballad,” “Typhoon-kun,” “Nocturne,” and the title track “Ema,” the changing of the seasons, memories, partings, and prayers for the future are quietly sung. A cynical perspective and unwavering warmth. The fact that both coexist seamlessly is undoubtedly one of this album’s greatest charms. The aesthetic sensibility of vintage pop and contemporary indie sounds. Everyday life and fantasy; modernity and universality. Born from the quiet space that connects these realms, *Ema* gently reflects Uwanosora’s current state within seemingly ordinary landscapes. It is their most natural album to date—one you’ll want to listen to over and over again without feeling the need to put on airs.
