Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, George "Bongo Joe" Coleman... Legendary black music collection by renowned blues collector/folk music researcher! From the late 1950s to the early 1970s. From the late 1950s to the early 1970s, the Texas area was a treasure trove of blues and other black and Hispanic-American music. Members of the black community in Texas would gather at beer joints, dance halls, and each other's homes to enjoy the music, a staple of that era. Of course, among the community were blues icons such as Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb. Robert McCormick (1930-2015), a folk music researcher and ethnographer, visited the state's African American community frequently and conducted in-depth field research. By the time of his death, he had accumulated approximately 590 reels of field recordings, 165 cardboard boxes of manuscripts, numerous volumes of research notes, thousands of snapshots and their negatives, flyers, posters, and more.However, the research and collections were never presented to the public, and have remained legendary among scholars and American roots music aficionados. After McCormick's death, there were many who feared that the collection would remain in a state of decay. This film finally unveils a portion of the McCormick legendary collection, which contains valuable records in the history of black music in the United States. Led by blues icons such as Lightnin' Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb, this collection of field recordings is truly the "Holy Grail of Lost Black Music".
