2017 Leipzig Bach Festival Live Mass in B minor by Blomstedt Live video from the 2017 Leipzig Bach Festival. Leipzig is associated with J.S. Bach, who from 1723 until his death in 1750 was the Thomas Cantor in charge of the choir and worship music at St. Thomas Church. The festival began in 1904 to coincide with the founding of the New Bach Society, and each year has a different theme. The festival begins with an opening concert conducted by Thomas Cantor, and around 100 events are held throughout the city. The final concert is traditionally a performance of the "Mass in B minor" in St. Thomas' Church; 2017 featured Herbert Blomstedt, long-time Kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Blomstedt took the same stage in 2005 for the concert that marked the end of his tenure, a performance that has gone down in the annals of musical storytelling. (The performance is a masterful example of how well Blomstedt has been performing in recent years, as in the famous performance of 12 years ago.
