Description:

Latest footage from 2011: Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5, performed by Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra ACCENTUSMUSIC has released a video recording of Abbado conducting the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in a performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5. This recording captures a concert held in August 2011 and garnered significant attention as one of the major highlights of that year’s Lucerne Festival. ■ Bruckner Conducted by Abbado Bruckner and Mahler are often compared as two of the leading symphonic composers of the 19th century. In stark contrast to Mahler—whose complete symphonies Abado has recorded, including multiple recordings and video releases—Abado has, surprisingly, only recorded specific movements of Bruckner’s symphonies as part of official commercial recordings. No. 1: Vienna Philharmonic, 1996 live / Vienna Philharmonic, 1969 studio session No. 4: Lucerne Festival Orchestra, 2006 live / Vienna Philharmonic, 1990 studio session No. 5: Vienna Philharmonic, 1993 live No. 7: Lucerne Festival Orchestra, 2005 live (*video recording)/Vienna Philharmonic, 1992 studio session Symphony No. 9: Vienna Philharmonic, 1996 Studio Recording Nevertheless, Abbado’s interpretations of Bruckner—in which the beautiful melodic lines flow as if in song—are brimming with a unique charm and have captivated countless fans. ■ Bruckner with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra As noted above, for Abbado, Symphony No. 5—a video recording with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra marking his first Bruckner project with them in six years since the 2005 recording of Symphony No. 7—becomes his second recording of this work, following the 1993 live recording with the Vienna Philharmonic. The high potential of this orchestra has already been demonstrated in their previous Mahler recordings, so I hesitate to dwell on it at length here, but I am once again deeply impressed by the beauty of the slow movement. The powerful and majestic finale also truly showcases the orchestra’s exceptional caliber. Following Symphony No. 5, Abbado is set to conduct the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in a performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1 in 2012, and this recording suggests that this collaboration remains as strong as ever.
