Continuum XXI features a lineup of early instruments—including the recorder, Baroque violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, juxtaposing works by Telemann, Monteverdi, and Lully with contemporary pieces by Ligeti, Berio, Sánchez-Verdú, Lascano, and Arrojo. These Baroque masterpieces and contemporary works are not merely set in contrast; they are linked by shared sensibilities—mechanical sounds, microtonal fluctuations, physical noise, and intense affect. Through Ligeti’s Continuum, which pushes the harpsichord to its limits; a new work by Alojo; fresh arrangements of Baroque pieces; and the addition of poetic interludes, the potential of period instruments is being reimagined in a highly contemporary form.
