Herbert Schuf / Ullmann, Beethoven: Piano Concertos A series of “degenerate music” works began to show signs of revival toward the end of the 20th century. The reality is that composers labeled as “harmful and degenerate” by Nazi Germany were subjected to unjust treatment; performances of their music became difficult, and many of their works were lost. Ullmann was one such composer of “degenerate music,” and because of his Jewish heritage, he met a tragic end. This piano concerto was written in 1939, before the persecution began, and retains a lively quality achieved through its concise compositional style. It is said that Ullmann was strongly influenced by Beethoven when composing his piano sonatas, and Schuf’s decision to pair this work with a Beethoven concerto here likely serves to highlight that impression even more.
