Recordings] May 26-28, 2024, Zipper Hall, Colburn School of Music, Los Angeles (1, 2, 6-17); November 4-5, 2023, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles (3-5) The talented French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will record a new album of Khachaturian's concertos with the "dream team" of the charismatic Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The album will be released in the fall of 2012. Khachaturian's Piano Concerto in D-flat major is a rarely recorded concerto. It is coupled with Khachaturian's short solo piano works, including the popular "Adagio" from "Spartacus," the "Sword Dance" and "Lullaby" from "Gaïne," the "Masked Ball" suite, and a selection from "The Boyhood Picture Book.Thibaudet is still actively performing works that were once dominated by virtuosos such as William Capell (1922-1953) and Oscar Levant (1906-1972). In 1945, Decca made the world's first recording of Khachaturian's piano concerto, performed by the English pianist Maura Limpany. The concerto was performed by the pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, whose passion was the driving force behind the performance. Thibaudet had a perfect grasp of the score and deftly handled the ultimate in flamboyant power and light-hearted meditation."--The Los Angeles Times (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
