Recorded January 2024 Performers. Andris Nelsons (conductor) Boston Symphony Orchestra Recording location] Boston A collection of Shostakovich recordings by a new generation of maestros To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death, Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the music director, will release a 19-CD box set of Shostakovich recordings. Nelsons is a maestro of the new generation, born in 1978 in Soviet-era Latvia. The set includes a collection of symphonies, which won three Grammy Awards in 2016, 2017, and 2019; a collection of piano, violin, and cello concertos with Yuja Wang, Baiba Sklide, and Yo-Yo Ma as soloists; and the latest recording of soprano Christine Opolais and tenor singers The latest recording of the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County, sung by Brenden Gunnell, Peter Holle, and others. Bass-baritone Matthias Goerne sings a superb solo in Symphony No. 13, "Babi Yar". Shostakovich died on August 9, 1975, and over the past 50 years his reputation has only grown, and he is recognized as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. And people continue to be interested in Shostakovich's relationship with the Soviet regime. Was he a loyal "servant" or a bitter and secretive dissident? But this question seems misplaced for Nelsons, who grew up in Latvia, experienced the Soviet system firsthand, and devoted much of his career to studying and conducting Shostakovich's music.Nelsons said, "The great thing about his music is that it transcends politics. It speaks to people whether they know the times he lived in or not," Nelsons said. (UNIVERSAL MUSIC/IMS)
