Limited edition. Founded in 1956, Philharmonia Hungarica is a virtuoso ensemble of immigrant musicians of Hungarian origin. While performing in Europe and the United States, they rose to prominence through these albums by Mercury and Philips, and became known alongside the name of conductor Antal Dorati. Dorati and the Philharmonia Hungarica recorded Haydn's complete symphonies for Decca in the early 1970s to great acclaim. However, the recordings in this set are much earlier and already demonstrate their strong artistic connection. As critics of the time noted, the strings play with a special unity and a unique ""Hungarian"" resonance. All six Mercury albums were recorded in June 1958 at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The recorded repertoire is primarily Hungarian music of the past 50 years, with works that are vibrantly colorful and full of rhythmic energy. The Haydn symphonies reveal the ensemble's early taste for Haydn, and Dorati, acclaimed as an excellent ballet conductor, brings a sense of breadth to the collection of Viennese waltzes. The two albums on Philips are a coupling of Bartók and Weinel from October 1957 and a recording of Bartók from 1974. The performances are full of tension. Bartók's "Two Romanian Dances" and "Divertimento for Strings" and Kodály's "Galanta Dances" are available on CD for the first time. The booklet includes an essay by music historian David Patmore on the history of the Philharmonia Hungarica and their recording debut. Newly remastered from the original master tapes.
