This is the first reissue of a rare masterpiece of funky Brazilian soul released in 1981 at a loud 45 rpm! The Black Rio movement was strongly influenced by the North American civil rights movement and its political message in soul music, and combined it with Brazilian samba rhythms to create a sound that was uniquely their own. Serginho Mirici is another musician who was influenced by this movement and grew up in the northern suburbs of Rio. Born and raised in a musical family, he wrote their signature song, "Som Da Copa 7," for the band Copa 7, which was already in the midst of this movement by the time he was a teenager, and released their first album, "Bons Momentos," on Polydor in 1981. This album featured the funky bass and guitars that characterized the Black Rio sound, but also included a samba-rock approach akin to that of George Benn, as well as the introduction of synthesizers unique to the 1980s. The result was a sound that was a step ahead of the previous movements.When we interviewed him about the reissue, he told us, "The message of the album was about love and equality, and above all, it was a portrait of our life at that time. Many black people in Brazil, not only in Rio, have felt structural racism and pain for years, and it hasn't improved at all. This is the reason why the album is so important," he says, "to show that this kind of situation still prevails in Brazil, behind the country's bloody history and the glamorous tourist aspect that seems to cover it up. Before imagining caiparinhas on a white sand beach under the dazzling Brazilian sun while listening to this wonderful album, it is only right for music fans to be aware of these facts as a sobering reminder.
