Analog reissue of Kalapana's second album, one of Hawaii's best-selling albums of 1976! ! Following the huge success of his 1975 debut album, Kalapana returned to the studio in 1976, this time at Audiotronics in West Covina, California, to take the lead in producing the record. Although Los Angeles producer Barry Fussman joined them in the studio to arrange strings and conduct some of the songs, they essentially produced the album themselves, and did so with aplomb. Lead vocalist Malani Bilille delivers a ballad of love on "Wandering Stranger," while keyboardist Kirk Thompson leaves his mark on the group's legacy forever with the Latin jazz-funk of "Black Sand. (The song has become a staple of the band's live show, opening nearly every concert since.) Considering the perfection and timelessness of "Kalapana I," the band must have realized the hurdle to surpassing the first with their second album, but they pulled it off and released a hit album with many of their most enduring hits.As a quartet supported by the technique of drummer Alvin Fejaran and the skill of saxophonist Michael Paulo, this recording established Mackie Fairley, Malani Biliu, D. J. Pratt, and Kirk Thompson as one of Hawaii's leading groups!
