Following the release of "A Time for Joy" in 2020, the latest recording of Liszt's songs by Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch, made possible by Corona, is a collection of songs by the 19th century European music giant. Both artists have a special sympathy for Liszt's songs, which they have performed in recital for many years. The difficult "Petrarch Sonnets" is a particular favorite of Kaufman's, and was featured in his 2015 recital during his long-awaited visit to Japan, while "Oh love me, love me as long as you can," "Lorelei," and "It must be wonderful," are also encore favorites. On the other hand, it was during the time that Corona gave us that we were able to discover songs like "Full of Joy, Full of Sorrow," which were full of jewel-like brilliance but hidden behind more famous songs, and to explore the music of the road to our heart's content. The album was born out of the fact that I had to take a break from performing because of the Corona disaster. Under normal circumstances, this would not have been possible so quickly. As a result, we were able to uncover not only works with which Helmut and I were familiar, but also some hidden pieces that had been hidden behind more well-known works. Among them, "Silent Water Lilies" is more and more fascinating the more I listen to it.I thank Helmut for leading me into the world of these treasured songs, and I know that everyone who will hear them will be delighted." He has already recorded Liszt's Lieder with Yumiko Samejima (1994) and Diana Damrau (2011). In fact, even today, Liszt is not recognized as an outstanding composer of songs, even though he has left a brilliant name in the history of the art song.
