François Leroux is a world-class French oboe player and a member of the super wind ensemble Les Vents Francais. He already has a strong presence in the Warner catalog. Here, he teams up with pianist Emmanuelle Strosset to focus on works for oboe and piano. All of these works were composed in France in the 20th century and include works by Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Dutilleux, Pierné, and lesser-known works by Boza, Sancan, and the contemporary Thierry Pecque. As François Leroux points out, the oboe occupies a special place in French music: in the 17th century, Louis XIV had a band of oboes and bassoons in Versailles and established an instrument factory in the northern French town of La Couture. Many French composers privileged the instrument in their music, and few could find a player who could play them more eloquently than Leroux.The oboe was praised as "a very charismatic and flamboyant oboist, with perfect technique and a dazzlingly bright tone that matched the music."
