The quartet has been performing Shostakovich on their eighth disc for the Sprafon label. The quartet has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Gramophone Award 2011 for their recording of Dvorak's "America" (SU-4038 / KKC-5170), which was named Record of the Year. The quartet is one of the best string quartets of our time, and their reputation grows with each release. Shostakovich composed 15 string quartets, of which this disc features recordings of No. 2, No. 7, and No. 8. The three string quartets are: No. 2, which is one of Shostakovich's largest symphonic and dramatic chamber works; No. 7, dedicated to Shostakovich's first wife, Nina Vasilyevna Shostakovich, who died in 1955; and the most famous, No. 8, composed in memory of Jewish victims of the Nazi regime, Each piece had its own unique character, and the performance was filled with a sense of tension.
