Music for a New Century" is the latest album for Deutsche Grammophon, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, an all-commissioned orchestra that is dedicated to contemporary classical music. It was recorded at Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University in California. All four works on the album were commissioned by the New Century Chamber Orchestra. Philip Glass's Piano Concerto was premiered by the New Century Chamber Orchestra in 2018 in West Court, USA. Here it is performed by Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov. Three other works, Mark-Anthony Tanej's Lamento for solo violin and strings, and Tan Dun's Double Concerto for Violin, Piano, Percussion and Strings, also performed by Botvinov with Hope and the New Century Chamber Orchestra, New Century Chamber Jake Heggie's latest work, written in honor of the New Century Chamber Orchestra's anniversary year, is a world premiere recording. These emotionally rich works as a whole add a remarkable breadth of musical ideas and styles that encapsulate the New Century Chamber Orchestra's commitment to contemporary classical music. Daniel Hope, violinist and music director of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, said, "It might not normally occur to you to put these four composers together, but in doing so, we are celebrating the orchestra's creative engagement with new music." Our dedication to contemporary music has only grown stronger under Hope's leadership. This multi-disciplinary artist and music activist worked with New Century as an artistic partner during the 2017/18 season. And beginning with the 2018/19 season, they will serve as Music Directors, whose performances and other projects are characterized by a shared New Century passion for excellence, innovation, and hope for exploration.
