Prayers" by Stravinsky and Debussy, performed by two pianos In their first album for Deutsche Grammophon, Invocations, the French sister-piano duo Katja and Marielle Lavec perform Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and Debussy's "The Ancient Epigraph" on two pianos, rather than the four-handed version intended by the composers. Both pieces were written in the early 20th century, and it is speculated that Debussy's piece was influenced by Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," which was inspired by an ancient religious rite that he was friends with. We played this piece in concert with four hands, as it was a piece intended for a single keyboard instrument, and we never played it with two keyboard instruments if we were comfortable with the four-hand relationship."However, under the constraints of recording, where everything must be precisely controlled, we found that playing with two keyboard instruments produced better results.
