Amen Dunes

Description:

Amen Dunes is the solo project of acclaimed progressive indie artist Damon McMahon. Six years after his masterpiece "Freedom," which has been called "the best album of the decade," the new album "Death Jokes," his first with Sub Pop, has been released. Highly acclaimed progressive indie artist Amen Dunes is releasing a new album, "Death Jokes," his first for Sub Pop. This is their first new album since 2018's "Freedom," which Pitchfork described as "the best album of the decade." Recorded primarily at Amen Dunes studio in New York City, Death Jokes features jazz bassist Sam Wilkes, producers Christoffer Berg (Fever Ray) and Kwake Bass (Tirzah & Dean BLunt), and Panoram and Money Mark. On the album, for the first time since the project's inception in 2006, Amen Dunes' spiritual musings and meditations are sharply directed away from himself and toward the world. It also marks a drastic change of direction, both musically and thematically. While rooted in the rave and rap electronic music that he grew up with, the work is also a poignant electronic essay on the American culture of "violence, domination, and destructive individualism that I never imagined I would have to deal with." Work on Death Jokes began in the winter of 2019, a few weeks before the first news of the pandemic arrived. It was completed three years later, as we began to emerge from the worst of it. The meaning of the album changed as the pandemic progressed. At first, it was a reflection on our obsession with form and ourselves, but it soon became an indictment of our culture's blind spots, where "we misjudge, attack, and veiled self-centeredness and self-importance masquerade as morality."
