Beethoven (1770-1827)
Description:
■This is the debut disc of Igor Levit, a young prodigy pianist who combines perfect technique and artistic maturity. And he comes out of the blue with a two-disc set of Beethoven's late sonatas, six pieces. Born in 1987 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Levit made his orchestral debut at the age of six, moved to Germany with his family at the age of eight, graduated from the Hanover College of Music with the highest honors in his career, and became the youngest competitor at the 2005 Rubinstein International Piano Competition. In 2004, she won the second prize at the Maria Callas International Competition in Athens and the first prize at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition. She has performed with many of the world's top orchestras and conductors, and has been active in chamber music as well, touring Japan in 2012 and performing with the Staatskapelle Dresden, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and others, and giving recitals throughout Europe. She is currently a BBC Radio 3 "Young Generation Artist" and was selected for the "Rising Star Program" of the prestigious German music prize "Echo Prize". In his important debut with Sony Classical, Levitt will perform Beethoven's late sonatas.Among Beethoven's 32 sonatas, which have been called the New Testament of piano music, these six late sonatas are the repertoire that requires the greatest technical and spiritual challenge. The fact that Levitt chose these six sonatas for his debut shows his strong confidence and the high expectations of Sony Classical. The sonority is lucid despite its weight, the range is wide from the weakest to the highest notes, and the spirituality is deep and nostalgic. Not a day goes by that he doesn't think about Beethoven's sonatas," he says, "The physically demanding Hammerklavier Sonata is hardly a work written for an aging pianist," and "When the Arietta theme returns at the end of the last movement of Op. 111, I feel something holy." Levitt's sensibility is modern and truly lush, and he uses bold intensity, precision, and delicacy to portray the depth of the work. Glenn Gould and Maurizio Pollini are among the pianists who have made unique recordings of late sonatas at a young age, and Levitt's debut recording should be considered one of his best-known recordings in the future. ■ "This young pianist not only has the potential to become one of the greatest pianists of this century. He has already reached that level" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) "The most fascinating young pianist in classical piano today" (South German Newspaper) "Levitt knows everything there is to know about music" (Kulturradio) Sony Music
