Description:

Following Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" and Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto" with Kopatchinskaja, Theodor Kurrenzis' new release is a Blu-ray/DVD of Purcell's opera "The Indian Queen. This is a live video recording of the highly publicized performance at the Teatro del Liceu, reconstructed and directed by the genius Peter Sellers. Based on the tragedy of Queen Sempoala's attempt to seize the throne of Mexico until she took her own life, "Queen of the Indies" was written in Purcell's final years, but was never completed due to Purcell's premature death. Fascinated by this work, Peter Sellers spent 25 years developing the idea and adapting the story and characters of Nicaraguan author Rosario Aguilar's novel "The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma" to Purcell's opera. In addition to the original music and libretto (approximately 50 minutes) for "The Queen of India," the musical side of the production includes Purcell's religious anthems and instrumental pieces, while the libretto adds the text of Aguilar's novel. Aguilar's novel depicts the Spanish conquest of Central America in the 16th century through the perspectives of several women of the same period, which, when superimposed on the plot of Purcell's opera, takes on a more multifaceted and contemporary meaning. With art by Chicago-based artist Gronk (also used on the DVD/Blu-ray packaging) and choreography by Christopher Williams, music, theater, dance, literature, and the visual arts come together to create an exciting and entirely new plot for the The production has been revived as a stage production with an exciting new plot that combines music, theater, dance, literature, and visual art.(1/2) Sony Music
