During that year, Davis worked with Rudy Van Gelder at his studio for five groundbreaking sessions, all of which honed his sound, matured his leadership, and collaborated with some of the brightest rising stars of the era. The resulting recordings catapulted Davis' career to the next level and set the tone for the post-bop scene of the mid-to-late '50s. This release not only marks the 70th anniversary of those recordings, but also the 75th anniversary of Prestige Records, the venerable independent jazz label founded by producer Bob Weinstock. The label was founded by producer Bob Weinstock to bring the cutting-edge sounds of bop, hard bop, and soul jazz to the world while developing the careers of iconic artists such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and, of course, Miles Davis.
